India Secures 165-Run Victory Over Sri Lanka in Second Test
India clinched a decisive 165-run victory against Sri Lanka in the second Test match, demonstrating patience and persistence on a challenging pitch. The hosts posted scores of 462 and 193, while Sri Lanka managed 284 and 206.
During the final innings, Sri Lanka’s Sonal Dinusha fell just 16 runs short of a second century, scoring 84, while Dhananjaya de Silva contributed 59. The Indian bowlers, particularly Manav Suthar, proved effective, taking four wickets in just 10 balls. Suthar’s performance culminated in a five-wicket haul, rendering the new ball unnecessary.
This victory is significant for an Indian team undergoing a transition, having lost two of its last three series in home conditions that favor spin. Although they won the toss, the team had to deal with fluctuating weather, which influenced the batting approach of the middle-order players in the first innings.
The bowling attack featured strong contributions from Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja, and the seamers, who collectively maintained solid control throughout the match, accounting for five wickets overall. Kuldeep Yadav also showed signs of improving rhythm.
On the last day, with Sri Lanka needing six wickets to win, India opted for pace at one end, with Mohammed Siraj and Jadeja challenging Dinusha and de Silva, both of whom had reached half-centuries. Jadeja returned to dismiss de Silva shortly after the start of the day’s play, capitalizing on a missed edge and inducing a top-edge sweep.
Niroshan Dickwella struggled at the crease, attempting aggressive shots and frequently moving around in response to bowlers. His innings ended when he top-edged a cut shot due to being cramped by the bowling line. Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha held on for about 15 overs, but Dinusha’s dismissal, caught at leg gully from a delivery pitched outside leg, opened the floodgates for the Indian bowlers.
Suthar’s subsequent three wickets demonstrated his ability to increase pace and maintain a square seam, yielding less turn than anticipated. His variations proved effective, as Nuwantha was bowled off an inside edge just 2.2 overs before the arrival of the new ball.
