Arsenal Finalizes £51 Million Deal for Aston Villa Defender Ezri Konsa
Arsenal has reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of defender Ezri Konsa, valued at approximately £51 million ($69.4 million), according to sources. This deal follows a prior £30 million ($40.8 million) bid that was rejected earlier this summer, as Villa had set an asking price of £60 million ($81.7 million) for the England international.
The new offer reportedly includes performance-related add-ons and has been accepted as Arsenal looks to bolster its defense. Manager Mikel Arteta has identified Konsa as a key reinforcement, and with personal terms nearly finalized, a medical examination is anticipated on Thursday.
The 28-year-old defender, who played every match during England’s World Cup campaign until their semifinal exit to Argentina, is anticipated to fill gaps in Arsenal’s defensive lineup. William Saliba is sidelined for an extended period due to a back injury, while Jurriën Timber is still weeks away from returning as he recovers from a groin injury.
Arsenal previously explored the possibility of signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah but found the asking price too high, prompting them to turn back to Konsa and negotiate closer to Villa’s valuation. Konsa has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park.
The Gunners are set to kick off their Premier League title defense on Friday against newly-promoted Coventry City. With Konsa’s addition, he will become Arsenal’s fifth signing of the summer, following the permanent acquisition of Piero Hincapie from Leverkusen and the additions of Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimarães.
