Stephen Fleming Appointed Head Coach of England Test Team, Michael Hussey Considered for Batting Role

Stephen Fleming, age 53, has been named the new head coach for England’s red-ball cricket team, effective immediately as he prepares for his first assignment: a three-Test tour of South Africa at the end of the year. Fleming is set to arrive in the UK in September to familiarize himself with the county system and start planning for the upcoming winter, which includes assembling his coaching staff.

As part of the staffing process, Fleming has approached Michael Hussey, a close associate from their nearly 20-year collaboration at Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, to join as a batting and/or assistant coach. Hussey, who served as a batting consultant for England during their victorious T20 World Cup campaign in 2022, has confirmed the preliminary discussion but has yet to give it serious consideration. He told Fox Sport News, “I have not been able to give it any thought whatsoever. I’ve just got back from the UK myself with coaching in the Hundred.”

Hussey, a former Australian international who averaged 51.52 across 79 Tests, expressed an openness to the idea of returning to coaching England, even while competing against his native country in the Ashes next summer. “Would I? I wouldn’t say never to anything really – whether it’d be England, whether it be Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa. I just love the coaching side of the game and just to be able to work with different players,” he stated.

Reflecting on his previous experience with England, Hussey noted that putting on the training shirt felt strange initially, but he quickly became absorbed in the coaching process once working with the players. One potential challenge for Hussey would be the demanding lifestyle associated with England’s packed Test schedule, which includes 15 Tests in the next 12 months. This would necessitate significant time away from his family, especially as he is currently taking a break after coaching Welsh Fire in the men’s Hundred.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is taking its time to finalize Fleming’s coaching staff, as they currently have experienced figures—including Marcus Trescothick, Jeetan Patel, and Tim Southee—who will continue with the Test squad. These coaches will work alongside Brendon McCullum for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka in September. The future of these positions beyond the summer remains to be clarified.

Additionally, Criinfo has reported that the ECB aims to appoint a lead batting coach to oversee the development of batters across all formats, similar to the existing role held by Troy Cooley for pace bowlers. The new batting lead will be responsible for nurturing talent from the senior international level down to age-group teams.
