Hideo Kojima’s “Physint” Transitions to Xbox After PlayStation Withdrawal

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Hideo Kojima’s upcoming title “Physint” is now partnered with Xbox after PlayStation stepped back.
  • Kojima confirmed ongoing development and casting plans, with talent already attached.
  • The game, originally a PlayStation exclusive, may hint at franchise potential under Xbox.

Hideo Kojima has initiated significant changes to his upcoming “action espionage” title, “Physint”. Originally announced as a PlayStation exclusive for 2024, the game is now under the auspices of Xbox, led by Asha Sharma. PlayStation reportedly “stepped away from the project” earlier this year for undisclosed reasons.

In an official statement, PlayStation explained, “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on Physint. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”

Asha Sharma commented on the development, stating, “Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox.”

Last summer, Kojima indicated he was working on “Physint” independently, suggesting that the project has now progressed to a new phase of production. Earlier this year, Kojima noted that casting, scans, and performance capture sessions for the game would begin in ‘late 2026’. Reports from last year indicated that actors such as Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe were already involved in the casting process.

Addressing the situation in a tweet, Kojima confirmed, “As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project. Physint is an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”

Kojima previously highlighted a connection between “Physint” and Columbia Pictures, a part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s sister company. A prominent reveal included a shot of the studio showcasing “Physint” branding. Whether this partnership will continue or shift to a Microsoft-owned studio remains to be seen.

Kojima’s transition to Xbox raises questions, as reports earlier this year indicated his other project, OD, remained unaffected by Microsoft’s restructuring efforts, which impacted many studios and games. This situation suggests Xbox may be more inclined to support Kojima’s vision compared to Sony, which is currently reevaluating its gaming investments amid stagnant profit margins. Herman Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, had publicly backed Kojima’s new title, indicating the recent split carries significant weight.

During Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary livestream, Kojima remarked that “Physint” is “just the start,” hinting at potential franchise opportunities—something that aligns with Xbox’s interest as it navigates through industry-wide changes.

In 2025, Kojima projected that “Physint” would not be released for another “five or six” years, positioning it as a potentially major title for the anticipated Xbox Project Helix. Conceived during a period of personal health challenges for Kojima, the game marks a return to the action-espionage genre that first brought him fame. The success of this partnership and the creative direction under Xbox remains to be seen.
