Casey Bloys, the head of HBO, reiterated his belief that the series adaptation of The Last of Us will wrap up in three seasons. Speaking to Deadline at an Emmys afterparty, he stated, “I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season,” in response to inquiries about whether Season 3 will be the last installment. Earlier in February, Bloys had indicated a similar sentiment, commenting, “it certainly seems that way,” when asked about the finale status of the upcoming season.
These remarks appear to contrast with those from Craig Mazin, who has claimed that there is “no way” to adequately conclude The Last of Us within three seasons. The timing of Bloys’ comments may suggest there has been a shift in perspective regarding the show’s future.
The Last of Us Season 3 is slated to air sometime next year and will concentrate more on Abby’s storyline from The Last of Us Part 2. This season will differentiate itself from the games by separating Abby and Ellie’s narratives, a decision that contributed to the mixed reception of the second series compared to the universally acclaimed first season. This variation in audience response raises questions about HBO’s interest in extending the series beyond the third season.
In addition to his work on The Last of Us, Mazin is also engaged in adapting Baldur’s Gate 3 for HBO, a project announced earlier this year. He is a noted fan of the game, and although developer Larian is not officially involved, they have invited Mazin to discuss ideas at their offices.
