Democrats on the Rise? What Prediction Markets Are Telling Us About the Senate Race!

Date:

Democrats Gain Ground in Senate Race Ahead of November Elections

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Prediction markets indicate a 54% chance for Democrats to win the Senate, with Polymarket showing 59%.
  • Republicans currently hold 20 of the 33 contested Senate seats, making Democratic victories in traditionally Republican states crucial.
  • Recent polls show Democrats ahead by nearly 9 percentage points among likely voters nationwide.

The battle for the U.S. Senate remains competitive, with recent prediction market analyses suggesting that Democrats have a significant opportunity to capture the upper chamber. Speculators on Kalshi assign a 54% chance of a Democratic victory, closely resembling figures recorded in mid-April. Meanwhile, Polymarket reflects even more optimistic odds, placing the chance at 59%.

This November, Republicans will defend majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. However, the Senate was always seen as a more challenging target for Democrats. Currently, Republicans control 20 of the 33 Senate seats up for election, necessitating Democratic victories in several states where President Donald Trump secured wins by margins of 10% or more in 2024, notably in Alaska, Texas, and Ohio, to gain a majority.

In 2026, Democratic odds to win the Senate have markedly improved on prediction markets. Prior to the onset of the U.S.-Iran war on February 28, Republicans were estimated to have roughly a 60% chance of retaining Senate control across both Kalshi and Polymarket. These chances have lessened due to rising gas prices affecting Trump’s approval ratings.

In April, the likelihood of a Democratic Senate victory exceeded Republican odds, but the GOP’s prospects rebounded in May and persisted through the summer as tensions between the U.S. and Iran subsided, resulting in eased gas prices.

Recent weeks have seen a decline in the GOP’s fortunes. Currently, U.S. oil prices are above $100 per barrel, gasoline costs over $4 per gallon nationally, and diesel prices have reached record highs. Prediction market traders now forecast that gas prices may hit new peaks in 2026.

Several recent polls indicate a favorable environment for Democrats as they approach the November elections. A New York Times/Siena University poll published on Wednesday revealed that likely voters express nearly 9 percentage point support for Democratic candidates over their Republican counterparts in congressional districts nationwide.
