Insomniac Games, the developer behind Marvel’s Wolverine, has refuted claims of using generative AI after fans shared screenshots of an unusual restroom sign via social media. The community director, James Stevenson, clarified that the sign’s bizarre appearance was the result of a “UV map bug” rather than AI generation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stevenson stated, “No. This is a UV map bug and we have a fix coming. There are no AI generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.” This response aimed to quell speculation arising from the unusual bathroom sign.

Commenters on social media reacted with skepticism, with one questioning the UV mapping technique, suggesting, “UV bug? So someone only UV’ed half the sign?” Another user offered to design an updated bathroom sign, expressing, “Uh… I probably would have just blamed AI, to be honest.”

Stevenson also addressed other comments regarding launch issues, including problems with Wolverine’s Scent Trailers and Audio Sense indicators causing crashes. He assured fans, “They are tied to other systems in places and with so many people playing we have to be deliberate in testing to not introduce new bugs or break people. Thank you for patience.”

Eurogamer’s review of Marvel’s Wolverine rated the game three out of five stars, noting the character’s portrayal as a highlight of the overall experience, which they described as “underwhelming.”

In related news, the CEO of Level-5, known for the Professor Layton series, recently apologized for utilizing generative AI in a studio showcase. Insomniac is not the only developer navigating AI technologies, as companies like Krafton, Square Enix, and EA are also investing heavily in AI.
