Blizzard Reveals New Level-Scaling Mechanic for Diablo 5, Inspired by Diablo 2

Blizzard has announced that Diablo 5 will feature a new level-scaling mechanism, distinguishing it from its predecessor, Diablo 4. Game director Joe Shely discussed this development during a roundtable interview at BlizzCon.
Shely emphasized the importance of players feeling powerful in the Diablo games, a sensation he believes has been undermined by the level-scaling systems in Diablo 4 and Diablo 3. Automatic level scaling ensures that enemies match the player’s level, which prevents players from encountering foes that are significantly weaker, or returning to earlier zones to feel their character’s growth.
Shely stated, “Diablo is a game that, in many ways, is about your character getting stronger and when the monsters get stronger at the same time, especially outside of your control… You’ve filled the experience bar, you get stronger, you should feel awesome now: a wave of light pulses out from you, a bunch of monsters die.”
He added, “And sometimes automatic scaling can get in the way of that feeling, which is so core to it, and that’s why this is a really important question. And so, we’re going to take a somewhat different approach to that in Diablo 5.” While Shely refrained from detailing what this new approach entails, he noted that the development team has not yet fully discussed level-scaling.
This indicates that Blizzard is open to altering a fundamental system that has been part of the last two Diablo titles. Furthermore, Diablo 5’s itemization and loot systems, which will include more intricate inventory management, are also reportedly influenced by Diablo 2.
Overall, Blizzard appears to be striving for a more challenging gameplay experience reminiscent of earlier titles and competitors like Path of Exile. However, fans will need to wait until spring 2029 to see how these concepts are realized in the final release of Diablo 5.
