The acclaimed Lord of the Rings games, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, featuring the notable ‘Nemesis system,’ will be available on the Switch 2 starting September 30. Aspyr is responsible for the conversions, which will include all previously released downloadable content (DLC).
The games are being offered as a bundle, available for pre-order at a 50% discount, reducing the price to £31.49 / $35, with the regular bundle price set at £62.99 / $70.
In her 2015 review for Eurogamer, Aoife Wilson praised the procedural Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor, highlighting how enemies could level up and climb ranks after encounters with players. This system added freshness to what otherwise could be a standard open-world action game. Johnny Chiodini reviewed Shadow of War in 2017 and noted that while gameplay improvements were evident, the story fell short.
The Nemesis system continues to distinguish the series, with few other games, such as Warframe’s Lich system and possibly Watch Dogs: Legion’s NPC relationship system, implementing a similar concept. This rarity might be attributed to the fact that Warner Bros holds the patent for the system until 2036.
Aspyr recently remastered the older Lord of the Rings game, War in the North, hinting at potential more classic LOTR games being re-released in the future. However, with Monolith Studios’ closure in 2025 and the cancellation of an in-development Wonder Woman game, prospects for entirely new games from that studio appear bleak.
