Arc Raiders Introduces PvE Matchmaking Test from October 13-20
- Arc Raiders will host a PvE matchmaking test from October 13 to 20.
- Approximately 37% of players prefer cooperative play over PvP.
- The test does not guarantee a permanent PvE mode in the future.
Embark Studios has announced a new matchmaking test for Arc Raiders, allowing players to opt into a player-versus-environment (PvE) mode that eliminates the typical player-versus-player (PvP) violence. This initiative responds to a segment of the playerbase expressing disinterest in engaging in intra-player conflict.
According to a blog post on the official Arc Raiders website, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal confirmed that the PvE test will take place from October 13 to 20. Participants can choose between the new cooperative version of the game and the standard version characterized by PvP interactions.
Grøndal elaborated on the game’s evolution from a co-op PvE shooter with looting mechanics to its current extraction shooter format. Interestingly, many players approach Arc Raiders collaboratively, also known as the “Extraction (Don’t) Shooter,” despite incentives for PvP engagement.
Statistics shared by Grøndal indicate that approximately 37% of raiders are more inclined towards cooperative gameplay, showcasing growth since the game’s launch. Meanwhile, 34% actively prefer PvP, a figure that has remained stable, while the remaining 27% exhibit a blend of both playstyles, indicating a demand for a structured PvE environment.
This new test will accommodate solo players as well as teams of two or three. However, certain map conditions, such as night raids and hidden bunkers—integral to the PvP experience—will not be featured. Furthermore, the loot value in the PvE mode will be reduced to match the lower risk associated with this gameplay style.
Grøndal acknowledged the inherent risks involved with this test, noting that the studio will closely monitor the player economy, particularly the potential for players to extract loot with minimal risk. Matchmaking times will also be under scrutiny during the testing period.
Importantly, Grøndal emphasized that the outcome of this test does not guarantee the introduction of a permanent PvE mode. He referred to it as an “indication that we are seriously considering it.”
Arc Raiders experienced significant popularity upon its launch, maintaining a robust player community in the subsequent months. The game quickly gained a reputation for fostering a friendly environment, setting it apart from other extraction shooters.
Some may interpret this shift towards PvE as a reflection of broader trends away from hardcore PvP gameplay, particularly following similar announcements from other games like Marathon. However, while Arc Raiders’ popularity has diminished, this move appears more as a response to community preferences rather than an effort to regain lost players.
Should Embark opt to implement PvE as a permanent game mode, questions arise about the potential impact on future updates and whether they will adequately cater to both PvP and PvE audiences, raising concerns about changes in matchmaking dynamics.
