Resident Evil Requiem Surges Past $500M, But What’s Behind Capcom’s Unexpected Price Drop Shockwave?

Date:

Resident Evil Requiem Surpasses $500 Million in Sales

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Resident Evil Requiem has generated over $500 million in sales, according to Alinea Analytics.
  • The game is currently most popular on PS5, with 4 million copies sold to date.
  • The new Resident Evil film made a strong box office debut but did not significantly boost game sales.

Resident Evil Requiem continues to achieve impressive sales figures, contributing to Capcom’s ongoing success. As estimated by Alinea Analytics, the ninth installment in the Resident Evil horror series has surpassed $500 million (approximately £377) in revenue.

According to Analyst Rhys Elliott, Resident Evil Requiem is set to outpace all previous titles in the franchise and is nearing the total earnings of Resident Evil 4’s remake, which reportedly earned over $600 million during its three years since release.

Notably, traditional sales data indicates that PS5 is the most successful platform for Resident Evil Requiem. The game has sold 4 million copies on this platform, with 30% of those sales attributed to physical copies, despite the industry’s ongoing shift away from physical media.

The recent reboot of the Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger, premiered to a record-breaking opening weekend, generating over $108 million globally. However, this significant box office performance did not translate into a corresponding increase in game sales for Requiem. In fact, during the film’s debut weekend, daily earnings for the game on PS5 dropped by 4%, going from approximately $284,000 to $271,000 due to ongoing discounted game prices.

Despite the minor dip in daily earnings, Cregger’s film did positively impact player engagement across the franchise. Older titles in the series, particularly Resident Evil 2’s remake, experienced a 48% increase in daily players once the movie was released. This surge in interest is likely attributable to the game’s setting and high-quality gameplay. Meanwhile, Resident Evil 3’s remake saw a 25% increase in player engagement.
