Brazilian Stocks Soar as Bolsonaro Emerges as the Unlikely Front-Runner—What’s Fueling This Stunning Turnaround?

Date:

Bolsonaro and Lula Advance to Brazil’s Presidential Run-Off Following First Round Voting

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Flávio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva advance to a presidential run-off in Brazil.
  • Bolsonaro’s odds of winning exceed 80%, significantly increasing post the first round results.
  • The final election will take place on October 25, 2026.

Brazilians are set to decide on October 25, 2026, whether to re-elect incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or support Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Both candidates advanced to a run-off after securing the most votes in the first round held recently.

The initial voting results have prompted a significant shift in investor sentiment. Speculators on the prediction market platform Kalshi currently assign over an 80% probability for Bolsonaro’s victory. Prior to the first round, his chances were estimated at around 60%. Similarly, on Polymarket, his odds have risen from 63% to 85% following the results.

Before the election, while Bolsonaro was perceived as a narrow favorite, pre-election polls indicated he would likely trail Lula in the first round. Contrary to expectations, Bolsonaro garnered over 47% of the votes, surpassing Lula by nearly 2 percentage points. In Brazilian presidential elections, if no candidate achieves a majority in the first round, the two candidates with the highest votes proceed to a subsequent run-off.

The positive reception of Bolsonaro’s results was reflected in Brazilian financial markets, with key assets surging post-elections. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF increased by over 12%, shares of Itau Unibanco climbed by 15%, and Banco Bradesco saw a 19% rise. Furthermore, Brazil’s local Bovespa index experienced an 8% gain.

Investors view Bolsonaro favorably due to his commitment to enforcing fiscal discipline, especially in light of Brazil’s deficit-to-GDP ratio nearing 10% as of June. Lula, on the other hand, is campaigning for a fourth term. He reclaimed the presidency in 2022 after defeating Jair Bolsonaro and is attempting to connect Flávio Bolsonaro to controversies surrounding his father’s efforts to challenge the outcome of the 2022 elections.

The upcoming run-off presents a significant moment for Brazil, with both candidates representing distinct electoral choices for the nation.
