Rockstar Games Discusses the Challenges of Satire in GTA 6 Development
- Development of GTA 6 has spanned several years, making timely satire challenging.
- Rockstar’s Rupert Humphries emphasizes the need to avoid fleeting trends.
- The portrayal of the American Dream will reflect modern societal shifts in the game.
Creating relevant satire presents a unique challenge for game developers, especially over prolonged development periods, as seen with the upcoming Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6. According to Rockstar Games’ senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, the team’s consistent aim has been to produce content that remains essential at the time of release.
In an interview with Love Magazine, Humphries noted, “We work on it for years and years, so you need to make content that will feel vital to the moment of release. If there’s a trend blowing up for six months, you need to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon.” Unlike other shows that can rapidly respond to trends, Rockstar’s high production values prohibit such a quick turnaround.
Instead of relying on outdated memes, Rockstar has focused on themes that capture their interest, such as conspiracy theories and the public’s reactions to daily events. Humphries explained, “In most cases, rather than trying to put a like-for-like of something real in the world, we have created our own slanted, overblown versions.” This approach allows the game to maintain a fresh narrative while addressing universal contemporary phenomena.
GTA has long been recognized for its dark satire, frequently addressing complex societal issues. A consistent theme within the series is its exploration of the American Dream and how perceptions of this ideal have evolved over time. Humphries observed that GTA 4 served as a “kind of hollow commentary on the illusion of America as a land of opportunity,” which was further exacerbated by the cynicism present in GTA 5.
When discussing the current interpretation of the American Dream, Humphries suggested it may be more modest today, reflecting a desire for basic stability: “It’s a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success – but maybe today, that is just out of reach for the average person.” He highlighted Miami and Southern Florida as critical locations in the ongoing struggle between vast wealth and unchecked ambition.
While Humphries refrained from disclosing explicit motivations for the game’s main characters, Jason and Lucia, his insights hint at a shift in narrative focus away from endless pursuit of wealth typical of prior protagonists. Players will gain a clearer understanding of this evolution when GTA 6 is released on November 19, 2023.
