Last year, Xbox officially canceled the reboot of Perfect Dark, which was being developed by The Initiative. This decision was part of a series of extensive cuts at Microsoft and Xbox in 2025. As of 2026, the situation for the company appears to have deteriorated further.
Recently, leaked gameplay footage of the canceled Perfect Dark reboot has emerged, offering a look at what was once in development. First reported by MP1ST, the footage showcases several weapons that protagonist Joanna Dark could have utilized, along with various environments in which she would have navigated and engaged in combat. According to MP1ST, the leaked clips originated from a VFX artist with experience across multiple gaming franchises, although the authenticity of the footage remains uncertain.
The leaked material displays the basic layouts of some level environments, initial gunplay testing, a few abilities, and even destructible fruit elements.

The reboot was initially announced in December 2020 and developed by The Initiative, part of Xbox Game Studios. The project became notorious for its protracted and challenging development process, with Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics brought in to assist at one point. By May 2024, reports indicated that there had been “little meaningful progress” since the game’s initial reveal, leaving it in “a very rough state.”
Following the report, a trailer for Perfect Dark was released, which temporarily revived interest in the project. However, just a year later, rumors about its cancellation began to surface. The game was expected to adopt an episodic structure, and after its cancellation, there were indications that Take-Two could have acquired the rights to the game, although this deal ultimately did not materialize.
