The recent trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode has sparked concerns regarding a potential imbalance related to player spawn options. Released as part of ongoing reveals, the trailer primarily details the out-of-match progression and metagame elements where players can upgrade weapons, unlock new skills, and craft items at the Forward Operating Base (FOB).
Significantly, the trailer outlines five distinct methods for players to ‘infil’ into matches, each varying in cost from free to a staggering $100,000 in DMZ Cash. The free deployment option spawns characters on foot at a random point, a standard approach in extraction shooters that ensures equal starting conditions for all players.
However, Modern Warfare 4 DMZ introduces additional options that could offer players unfair advantages. The second option, costing $5,000, deploys players using a Polaris Dagor A1 tactical vehicle, providing significant speed benefits. At $25,000, players can deploy in a Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV) that offers enhanced armor. According to the Call of Duty Blog, this vehicle can potentially be outfitted with an optional .50 caliber turret, although it remains uncertain if the spawned LTV will feature this addition.
Further increasing player advantage, a $50,000 option allows squads to spawn in a helicopter, greatly outpacing foot deployments. The highest tier, at $100,000, resembles a cargo plane similar to those used at the start of battle royale matches in titles like Warzone, presumably allowing teams to select their landing zones—an option not available to players using random spawn points.
It’s essential to note that the ability to spawn in more powerful vehicles such as the LTV and helicopter is contingent on completing specific story missions before they become available, even if players have enough DMZ Cash.
As these options provide distinct advantages, players deploying in vehicles can navigate the map much more quickly, allowing for efficient objective clearing and boss encounters. These vehicles persist throughout the match, enabling squads to move strategically between locations before reaching extraction points.
Reality, a long-time leaker in the Call of Duty community, previously hinted at these spawn options and outlined different weather conditions in DMZ. In a post on X, they mentioned that the final high-cost spawn option might feature an AC-130 gunship, raising issues about the game’s balance if such an overpowering vehicle were to be present at match start.
As players acclimate to the map and accumulate DMZ Cash over time, it is likely that new players relying on free spawns could find themselves severely disadvantaged. How Infinity Ward intends to address these disparities remains uncertain, particularly amidst existing confusion surrounding a PvE-only mode within DMZ. The DMZ mode will officially launch alongside Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2023, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
