New York Fed Drops a Bombshell: What Would Inflation Look Like Without Tariffs?

Date:

Impact of Trump’s Tariffs on Consumer Prices Revealed by New York Fed

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Many everyday item prices rose due to President Trump’s tariffs, with a reported increase of 2.9 percentage points.
  • About two-thirds of the tariff-related price impact is attributed directly to the tariffs themselves.
  • The Supreme Court’s recent ruling has led to the striking down of many tariffs, resulting in billions in refunds for retailers.

The New York Federal Reserve has reported that the cost of numerous everyday items would have decreased last year and early this year without the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. As of February, the prices of 67 categories of goods were found to be 2.9 percentage points higher due to these tariffs. In the absence of such levies, researchers estimated that prices for the evaluated products would have declined by nearly 1%.

This report from the New York Fed provides clear evidence of the financial impact of Trump’s tariffs, a central component of his reelection strategy and his approach during his second term in the White House. While economists anticipated an increase in prices resulting from the tariffs, the exact effects had been challenging to quantify due to the evolving nature of the policy and the opaque pricing strategies of companies.

The researchers did not specify which 67 goods were included in their analysis. Their findings indicated that for each percentage point rise in the average tariff, consumer goods prices rose by approximately 0.25% a year later. Price growth among the tracked goods peaked at the start of 2026, with consumers expected to continue facing elevated prices into 2027.

According to the report, roughly two-thirds of the rise in prices related to tariffs can be attributed directly to the tariffs themselves, while the rest stemmed from indirect effects, including costs incurred by U.S. companies reliant on imported components. The study’s authors, Mary Amiti, Sebastian Heise, and David Weinstein, noted that “tariffs have a larger and more drawn-out impact on consumer prices than the direct effect alone would suggest.”

Trump previously contended that businesses could absorb the increased costs from tariffs, minimizing the impact on prices for consumers. However, the analysis revealed that approximately 26% of last year’s tariff increases were indeed passed on to consumers in higher prices.

A Supreme Court ruling in February has invalidated several of Trump’s tariffs, which has led to billions of dollars in refunds for various retailers. Despite this, the White House has indicated plans to continue these levies through alternative means, with current tariffs on products imported from various countries generally sitting around 10%, notably lower than previous rates.
