Squadron 42 Now Available for Wishlist on Steam Ahead of 2027 Release

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Squadron 42 can be wishlisted on Steam, with a release expected in Q2 2027.
  • The game features a star-studded cast, including Mark Hamill and Gary Oldman.
  • Development has spanned over a decade, with the game operating on Cloud Imperium’s StarEngine.

Cloud Imperium Games announced that Squadron 42, a single-player spin-off of Star Citizen, is now available for wishlist on Steam as it gears up for a planned release in Q2 2027. The announcement was made on October 10, 2023, and comes with the release of a new trailer, which can be viewed here.

Set in the year 2945, Squadron 42 places players in the United Empire of Earth at a time of significant turmoil. Players assume the role of a rookie in the UEE Navy, serving aboard a capital ship where they will engage in naval and ground combat while forging relationships with crewmates and making critical decisions.

The gameplay promises a blend of space combat, ground operations, and stealth elements, interspersed with quieter moments to deepen interactions between characters. Notably, the game boasts a remarkable cast of actors, including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Henry Cavill, and Andy Serkis, all rendered through full performance capture.

Although Squadron 42 exists within the Star Citizen universe, it narrates a standalone story and utilizes the proprietary StarEngine technology developed by Cloud Imperium. The title has faced multiple delays since its inception, with its current release window set to Q2 2027, as stated by studio head Chris Roberts, who expressed concerns about competing with other major game releases such as GTA 6.

Furthermore, Cloud Imperium Games’ multiplayer title, Star Citizen, reached a crowdfunding milestone of over $1 billion in May 2023. This achievement coincided with the launch of a new spaceship, the Anvil Odin capital ship, which retailed for $5,000 (£3,700) as a “limited vehicle concept pledge,” although it did not come with a specific release date. Players who committed to the pledge were temporarily loaned an Idris P ship while awaiting the Odin’s availability.
