Sony Unveils Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Exclusively for Japan
- Sony announces a Midnight Black version of the disc-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
- The console will launch on November 19 in Japan for ¥55,000 (~$380 / £263).
- A region-locked version limits use outside Japan, while a matching blu-ray disc drive is also released.
Sony has introduced a Midnight Black variant of its disc-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, although this new model has only been announced for the Japanese market. The release date is set for November 19, coinciding with the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
According to the Japanese PlayStation Blog, the Midnight Black PS5 will retail for ¥55,000, roughly equivalent to $380 or £263. This pricing reflects the console’s foundation on a region-locked version introduced in Japan last November, which restricts language settings to Japanese and is limited to use with Japanese PSN accounts, thus hindering exports.
Alongside the new console, Sony will also offer a Midnight Black blu-ray disc drive for players who wish to keep their physical media options intact. This launch comes as Sony aims to alleviate demand for its PS5 Pro model, which has prompted the company to implement a lottery system to manage supply in Japan due to overwhelming interest.
For gamers outside Japan who want a Midnight Black aesthetic for their console, Sony offers Midnight Black Console Covers priced at $54 or £45. These covers are designed for easy removal and replacement, allowing users to change the appearance of their PS5 while maintaining the original black core. Additionally, a Midnight Black DualSense controller is available globally to complement this aesthetic.
Currently, the blu-ray disc drive is only available in standard white, leaving some speculation that a Midnight Black version may eventually be released for international markets following its initial launch in Japan.
