Morgan Stanley Reports Strong Third-Quarter Earnings Led by Equities Trading

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Morgan Stanley’s Q3 earnings per share reached $3.03, exceeding expectations of $2.91.
  • Revenue climbed to $20.34 billion, surpassing estimates of $19.95 billion.
  • Equities trading division saw a 41% revenue increase to $5.8 billion, while fixed income trading revenue fell 7%.

Morgan Stanley has reported its third-quarter results, beating analyst expectations primarily due to outstanding performance in its equities trading division. The financial institution announced earnings per share of $3.03, which is above the LSEG estimate of $2.91, and revenue of $20.34 billion, exceeding the predicted $19.95 billion.

The company’s net profit grew by 6.5% to $4.91 billion, translating to $3.03 per share. Revenue experienced a 12% increase, reaching $20.34 billion.

The equities trading division, a prominent segment for Morgan Stanley, experienced a remarkable 41% rise in revenue to $5.8 billion. This figure was approximately $909 million higher than analyst expectations. The firm noted broad strength across its equities products and highlighted Asia as a particularly strong region during the quarter, which helped balance out weaker performance in other areas.

Conversely, fixed income trading revenue fell by 7% to $2.01 billion, driven primarily by decreases in credit and commodities trading, falling about $260 million short of expectations.

Investment banking revenue edged up 2% to $2.16 billion, but still came in roughly $110 million below forecasts. Morgan Stanley attributed this increase to higher advisory revenues from completed mergers; however, it reported declines in both equity underwriting due to a drop in IPOs and fixed income underwriting.

Following the announcement, the bank’s shares saw a slight decline of less than 1% in premarket trading. Investors and analysts are particularly interested in insights from CEO Ted Pick regarding the outlook for mergers and IPOs for the remainder of the year, especially in the context of rising interest rates.
