Bungie Boss Hints at Exciting Move for Destiny 1—Could a PC Port Be on the Horizon?

Date:

Modders Successfully Run Destiny 1 on PC, Garnering Bungie’s Attention

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Modders have made progress in running Destiny 1 on PC, which was originally exclusive to consoles.
  • YouTuber Flummoxed showcased the game at 4K resolution and over 60fps, attracting Bungie’s attention.
  • The independent project, named Project Golden Age, utilizes AI and may face copyright enforcement from Sony.

The original Destiny was never released for PC, yet modders are working to change that. Their efforts to run the game on PC have recently captured Bungie’s attention, though no action has been taken against the modders as of now.

YouTuber Flummoxed has been documenting the progress, displaying gameplay footage of various elements from Destiny 1 running on PC at a resolution of 4K and exceeding 60fps. This PC build features a wider field of view compared to the console version, indicating enhancements have been made.

The latest video gained significant traction within the Destiny community and drew a lighthearted response from Josh Deane, the studio head of product and general manager of Marathon. He commented on the footage via X, stating, “Seems like a pretty game, wonder if it will do well…”

Despite Deane’s playful acknowledgment, it is important to recognize that this does not imply any official revival of Destiny 1 by Bungie. Given Sony’s history, it would not be surprising to see DMCA take-downs initiated soon.

Deane is also known for his role in a recent Bungie apology video, where studio leadership promised to restore removed content from Destiny 2.

Considering Bungie’s current staffing challenges and the need to balance workloads between Destiny 2 and Marathon, a release of Destiny 1 on PC is unlikely to be prioritized at this moment.

The modding project, referred to as Project Golden Age, employs a method that analyzes client and server requests to effectively reconstruct the game. Similar techniques have been utilized in other fan projects aimed at preserving online-only games after their shutdown, such as Anthem. Furthermore, it appears that generative AI technology is being integrated, as noted on the project’s GitLab page. While the project is still facing some physics and rendering challenges, it represents the closest approximation of Destiny 1 available on PC currently.
