League of Legends Classic to Shut Down After Current Season
- League of Legends Classic will be discontinued at the end of Season 3.
- Players will be refunded for cosmetic purchases in Riot Points.
- A return as a limited-time mode with adjustments is planned for the future.
Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic, a throwback version of the popular MOBA, will be taken offline at the conclusion of the current season. This decision stems from the observation that the majority of players have transitioned back to other areas of League of Legends.
Launched in July 2023, LoL Classic was initially believed to hold permanent potential, but that vision has changed. The service will conclude in January 2027, with plans to reintroduce it later as a limited-time mode featuring significant modifications.
In an official blog post, the League team stated: “We’ve seen a lot of players have fun revisiting the olden days with Classic. At this point though, most have gone back to other parts of League. So Classic will be available through the rest of Season 3 and will then end its current run in January 2027. We’ll then put Classic back in the box for now, with the goal of bringing it back, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.”
The team further emphasized their commitment to player feedback, sharing insights about what worked and what could have been improved during the Classic run. They expressed appreciation for player input in shaping the future of the game.
Players who made cosmetic purchases in LoL Classic will receive refunds in Riot Points, the game’s premium currency. However, new champions initially slated for Classic, including Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr, will still be released as scheduled. Exact details on when Classic might return or what changes are planned remain undisclosed.
The initial reaction to League of Legends Classic was positive among long-term fans, although the game mode faced backlash over its microtransaction system. Players were required to either earn retro visuals through a Classic-specific battle pass or purchase them, leading to criticism about charging for skins in a Classic mode.
While the closure of League Classic may disappoint fans, the anticipated return is positioned as an opportunity to create an enriched gaming experience that appeals to a broader audience in the future.
