Reaching break-even signifies that Valor Mortis has recouped its production costs; any subsequent sales will yield profit for One More Level and its publisher, Lyrical Games. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as the game launched during a busy period for new releases, notably overshadowed by the impending release of GTA 6.
Despite the competitive landscape that included titles such as Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Silent Hill Townfall, Gears of War: E-Day, and Marvel’s Wolverine, Valor Mortis has been well-received. Eurogamer’s review specifically highlighted the game’s engaging combat and unique parkour elements, stating, “Valor Mortis is a delight; a gloriously entertaining Soulslike whose fluid foundational combat and cleverly designed enemy encounters would probably be enough on their own.” Reviewer Matt Wales noted the game’s “exhilarating parkour” and intricate level design as contributing factors to its success.
One More Level was candid about the challenges of releasing a game during such a crowded season. The developer set the price of Valor Mortis at £40/$40, citing the competitive market and high demand for consumers’ time and finances. The release date was strategically adjusted from September 24 to avoid launching alongside other major titles.
Valor Mortis was made available last week across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass. In response to inquiries about downloadable content and future updates, the developer has indicated they are actively working on these features.
