A free point-and-click adventure inspired by the cult ITV children’s show Knightmare is currently in development. The game is officially licensed and will feature the original voice cast, promising a nostalgic experience for fans.
The project is led by writer and designer Ewen Watson, with the show’s creator, Tim Child, endorsing the initiative. It is set to launch on PC next year, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the show.
Knightmare originally aired on ITV from 1987 to 1994, captivating a generation of children with its fantasy RPG elements. Players would guide a “Dungeoneer” through a hand-painted dungeon, solving puzzles and avoiding obstacles under the guidance of the Dungeon Master, Treguard.
The new game will omit the players’ life force meter, a notable feature from the show, allowing for more exploration without the pressure of timed gameplay. Much of the original cast is returning, including Hugo Myatt as Treguard and Mark Knight as Lord Fear.
Watson emphasized that the game’s art is handcrafted, asserting, “everything you see and hear is made by real humans.” Despite its short estimated playtime of a couple of hours, the game will be free-to-play; however, there are no current plans to release it on consoles.
Thirteen years ago, a special one-off episode of Knightmare aired on YouTube, generating additional interest in the series.
