FBI and Santa Ana Police Investigate Theft of Over 6,400 PSA-Graded Cards from FedEx Truck

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • 6451 PSA-graded cards, including nearly 3000 Pokémon cards, were stolen from a FedEx truck in California.
  • The theft occurred on October 13, 2023; the total value of the items exceeds $963,000.
  • PSA is issuing refunds and has provided evidence to law enforcement to aid in recovery efforts.

The FBI and Santa Ana police are conducting an investigation into the theft of 6451 PSA-graded cards from a FedEx truck in California, which includes approximately 3000 Pokémon cards. The incident took place on October 13, 2023, shortly after the cards were picked up from PSA’s facility in Santa Ana.

According to PSA, the company stated that “recovering every stolen item and returning it to its owner is our top priority.” They have supplied investigators with video evidence, shipment manifests, and detailed records for each item stolen.

Of the 6451 items taken, PSA has compiled a comprehensive list of the stolen cards, which includes certification numbers and serial numbers for serialized cards. To prevent resale, PSA has deactivated these certification numbers and shared the list with marketplace sellers, auction houses, and digital commerce platforms.

As reported by TheGamer, the breakdown of stolen items reveals that 2978 Pokémon cards were among the most significant losses, followed by 898 One Piece cards, 880 basketball cards, 640 baseball cards, and 433 football cards. The New York Times estimated the total value of the stolen haul at over $963,000.

PSA has begun refunding grading fees for all impacted orders, clarifying that these refunds are distinct from compensation for the stolen cards. For orders with a PSA return label, the items are insured, and payments have commenced. Those who used their own shipping labels will need to coordinate with a dedicated PSA team, while customers who purchased through dealers should contact them directly. Compensation is determined based on fair market value, up to the maximum insured value declared for each item, with customers having the option to return recovered items.

Authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information regarding the theft to reach out to the FBI’s Los Angeles office or the Santa Ana police department.

Additionally, in a related incident in July, Cheshire Police apprehended brothers Keith and Shane Johnson for breaking into Celestial Collectables and stealing Pokémon cards valued at £62,000.
