Players Demand PvE Mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ
- Players are requesting a PvE option for DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
- Infinity Ward clarified a previously seen PvE option was only for developers.
- A petition for a PvE mode has garnered 331 signatures, but no official announcement has been made.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has launched, and its extraction shooter mode, DMZ, is gaining significant traction among players. This growing popularity has reignited a long-standing request: players are urging developer Infinity Ward to introduce a PvE-only variant of the DMZ mode.
Recently, an apparent oversight by Infinity Ward led some to believe that a PvE option for DMZ was on the horizon. However, the developer later clarified that this was a playlist intended solely for developers, confirming that DMZ is designed exclusively as a PvPvE experience.
With millions having played the game, discussions on DMZ and Modern Warfare 4 subreddits are increasingly populated with requests for a mode that enables gameplay without human adversaries. One user expressed this sentiment directly, stating, “Please give players the option to play DMZ without PvP,” highlighting frustrations over losing in-game operators and loot to ambushes from other players. The user noted the high cost associated with reviving an operator, which adds to the frustration.
While some players argue that a PvE mode would undermine the essence of an extraction shooter, others cite Call of Duty: Warzone, which includes options that allow players to respawn, as precedence. One Reddit user pointed out, “The common argument I see for NOT having a PvE only in DMZ is ‘because that defeats the purpose of an extraction shooter.’ Yet, Resurgence added respawns to the battle royale mode (Warzone).”
A small movement has emerged in the form of an online petition advocating for a PvE mode in DMZ, which has accumulated 331 signatures as of the current writing. Notably, Modern Warfare 4 lacks any purely PvE modes outside of its campaign, a departure from prior Call of Duty titles that offered co-op PvE experiences such as Zombies and Spec Ops.
This push for a PvE version of DMZ likely signifies a segment of players feeling underserved compared to previous releases that included more extensive PvE options. The demand for PvE experiences isn’t limited to DMZ; many extraction games appeal to players seeking looting, crafting, and PvE combat without the anxiety of potential player confrontations. For instance, Arc Raiders recently conducted a successful PvE playtest, although its future as a permanent feature remains uncertain.
Similarly, Bungie is reshaping its Marathon title to better resonate with players who prefer PvE gameplay, while Escape From Tarkov is expected to introduce a PvE variant in 2024. Given these trends, it may seem inevitable that Infinity Ward will face continuous requests for a PvE version of DMZ. However, as demonstrated by Arc Raiders and Tarkov, implementing such modes can be a lengthy process, raising questions about whether the currently vocal PvE-minded players will remain engaged by the time a potential solution arrives.
