Dan Greenawalt Departs Turn 10 Games After 27 Years Amid Xbox Restructuring
- Dan Greenawalt, founder and VP at Turn 10 Games, has left the studio after 27 years.
- This change coincides with the merger of Turn 10 and Playground Games as part of Xbox’s restructuring, which included 3200 layoffs.
- Greenawalt’s influence includes leading the Forza franchise and a legacy in racing games since 2001.
Dan Greenawalt, the director, founder, and vice president of Turn 10 Games, has exited the studio after a 27-year tenure. His departure aligns with the recent merger of Turn 10 with Playground Games under Xbox’s considerable restructuring initiative that resulted in 3200 job cuts and the closure of four studios earlier this year.
According to a report by The Verge, an internal memo from Playground Games studio head Trevor Williams stated, “Dan Greenawalt has decided that this is the right time for him to retire from Microsoft.”
The memo further expressed, “It’s hard to overstate Dan’s impact over the past 27 years. From shipping Project Gotham Racing on the original Xbox in 2001 to leading the creation of Forza… we owe tremendous thanks and gratitude to Dan.” Williams added his well wishes for Greenawalt’s future endeavors.
Following the merger, both Turn 10 and Playground Games will collaborate on the Forza and Fable franchises. The last title developed by Playground Games before this merger was the reboot of Forza Motorsport in 2023, which was well-received for offering a robust racing experience in contrast to the more arcade-focused Forza Horizon series. Eurogamer praised the game, describing it as “A generous and lavish racer, with thrilling driving, that wants you for the long haul.”
