A player of World of Warcraft: Forever is developing a mod called Retro Forever, which aims to transform Blizzard’s new MMO into a first-person fantasy RPG similar to Morrowind. This mod is notable for its nostalgic animations and does not utilize generative AI in its creation.

The project, led by modder Arhkain, has been documented in two development vlogs. In his initial vlog, Arhkain shares his desire to experience the world of Azeroth through his character’s perspective, expressing disappointment at the existing options that inhibit this gameplay style. His search for solutions ultimately led to the inception of Retro Forever.

Retro Forever aims to deliver “fully immersive” first-person graphics for various in-game activities, including combat, cooking, and exploration, reminiscent of classic titles like Morrowind and Hexen. The mod currently incorporates assets that have been adapted from these vintage games.

Described as a “clever combination of addons that already exist”, Retro Forever includes a custom user interface and specific animations for certain spells and abilities. For instance, mages casting spells will see unique character animations depicting their actions.

At present, the mod is not publicly accessible and is limited to a select few mage spells and class abilities. However, plans for expansion are underway, with Arhkain announcing that an artist has shown interest in contributing original assets to the project.

Regarding the absence of generative AI, Arhkain stated that such technology “wouldn’t help” in the development of the mod. Once Retro Forever integrates original art to replace the existing borrowed assets, it should also help avoid any potential legal issues.

With World of Warcraft: Forever scheduled for release on Wednesday, November 4th, anticipation is high for this new iteration of the beloved MMO. Early impressions from the beta suggest that the game is shaping up well.
