Nintendo’s Bold Move: Why Fast Travel Almost Ruined the Adventure in Ocarina of Time!

Date:

No Fast Travel in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will not feature fast travel.
  • Producer Eiji Aonuma cited the importance of exploration and discovery in gameplay.
  • The remake is set for release on November 5th.

Nintendo has announced that the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2 will not include fast travel, a feature that had been considered for implementation. This decision stems from the developers’ recognition of the original game’s exploration-focused design.

In a recent Ask The Developer blog post, series producer Eiji Aonuma explained that he had initially proposed adding warp points to allow players to navigate Hyrule more easily. However, Aonuma and the development team quickly realized that fast travel detracted from the sense of discovery that is integral to the game.

Aonuma stated, “In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there are many warp points that enable players to move quickly around the game’s vast world. In the original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, you could get around a bit faster by spamming forward roll.” He further elaborated that the team found that the inclusion of warp points would reduce those important moments of exploration, leading them to ultimately remove the feature from the remake.

The decision not to include fast travel has received a positive reception, as it resonates with players who appreciate the thrill of uncovering surprises throughout Hyrule, such as the unique Korok seeds scattered across the landscape.

Regarding the timing of the remake, Aonuma noted that younger developers on the team may not have played the original game when it was released 28 years ago. He indicated that this remake could inspire fresh insights that may be beneficial for future projects.

Art director Aya Shida discussed the remake’s art style, describing it as having a “puppet-show feel” and the “analog feel of practical effects films.” Shida emphasized that while these styles do not replicate reality, they successfully create a convincing sense of character existence within the game world.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled to be released on November 5th. Early hands-on impressions indicate that the remake is poised to be a noteworthy entry in the series.
