Carly Simon Reflects on Past Relationships in New Album “Comes in Waves” Released Aug. 14

Carly Simon’s long-awaited album, Comes in Waves, releases on August 14, marking her first in over 18 years. The second track, “Maybe I Never Loved You,” seems to echo themes from her turbulent marriage to musician James Taylor, which lasted from 1972 to 1983.

In the poignant lyrics of “Maybe I Never Loved You,” Simon expresses ambivalence about her past feelings, singing, “Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did. I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something.” The song continues to explore the complexity of love and uncertainty in relationships.

Simon also reflects on moments of support from Taylor, stating, “You came for me those times I hid / I’m so glad you did that. And maybe it’s wrong to wonder how everything kind became forbidden.” The lyrics speak to both the challenges and the fond memories associated with their time together.

At 83 years old, Simon shares two children—Sally, 52, and Ben, 49—with the 78-year-old Taylor, indicating that their shared history remains a profound influence on her music.
