Expert Stylist Offers Haircut Recommendations for Square Faces
Los Angeles-based stylist TerraRose has shared her top haircut recommendations for individuals with square faces, emphasizing how to communicate these styles effectively to your stylist. Her advice is rooted in achieving flattering silhouettes that soften angular features.
The Layered Lob
TerraRose describes the layered lob as her “favorite universally flattering option.” She advises that the hair should not end at the widest point of the jaw; rather, having it extend slightly past the chin can create a more elongated and fluid appearance. To achieve this look, she recommends telling your stylist: “I want a collarbone lob with soft, blended face-framing layers that start below my jaw. I want movement rather than a really blunt perimeter.”
Curtain Bangs
Curtain bangs are highlighted by TerraRose as another ideal choice for square faces, stating that they “create a vertical opening in the center of the face” and blend seamlessly into the layers framing the face. She suggests asking for longer, wispy curtain bangs: “Ask for longer, wispy curtain bangs rather than a thick, straight-across fringe. Other good options include side-swept or wispy bangs.”
Soft, Rounded Bob
While bobs are often viewed with caution by those with square faces, TerraRose insists they can be flattering if approached strategically. She notes that “a rounded bob with movement through the ends can actually soften the angularity beautifully.” She adds that the curved shape can highlight the cheekbones while softening the jawline, recommending lengths from chin to just below the chin instead of a sharp, geometric bob.
