Americans’ Debt Crisis: Are We on the Brink of Another Great Recession?

Date:

Rising Debt Strains U.S. Families, Federal Reserve Reports

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Nearly 20% of U.S. families are behind on loan payments, a significant increase since the last survey.
  • Median family income rose by 7%, while average income fell by 6%, highlighting income disparities.
  • Inflation-adjusted average net worth reached $1.24 million, reflecting gains among higher earners.

The ability of U.S. families to manage their debt has sharply declined over the past three years, reaching levels not observed since the post-global financial crisis era, according to a Friday report from the Federal Reserve.

The central bank’s Survey of Consumer Finances indicated that, while wealth inequality has narrowed to some extent, the proportion of families struggling to meet their debt obligations has significantly worsened.

“Families were more likely to be behind on their financial obligations than at any point since the 2010 survey,” the report stated, highlighting the growing financial pressures faced by households.

In 2010, the U.S. was emerging from the Great Recession, a downturn from December 2007 to June 2009, which was precipitated by a collapse in the subprime mortgage market, subsequently impacting major financial institutions and raising unemployment to 10% at its peak.

The latest findings revealed that by the end of 2025, the share of families behind on loan payments rose to nearly 20% from 12% in the previous survey, marking an increase of approximately 67%. Additionally, those behind on payments by two months or more surged to over 8% from 5% in 2022.

Concerns about financial stability persist among Americans, with a recent New York Fed survey indicating that households believe their financial situations have deteriorated over the past year and expect further weakening ahead.

The Friday report also noted an increase in the share of families with debt-to-income ratios exceeding 40%, which rose to 8.6% from 6.5% in 2022, the highest level since 2013.

Simultaneously, net worth for higher-income earners has surged, with the median net worth for those in the top income bracket climbing by 31%.

Covering a period of economic growth amidst the highest inflation rates seen since the early 1980s, the Fed found that real median family income had increased by 7%, while average income decreased by 6%.

The report elaborated, “Families in the lower ends of the income and net worth distributions saw modest increases in median and mean income, while families in the upper ends saw declines.” This suggests a slight decrease in income inequality since the previous surveys.

Income growth was particularly robust among families aged 75 and older, but fell by 25% for those aged 35 to 44, attributed to declines in capital gains income for that age group.

Notably, the report highlighted exceptions where Black non-Hispanic families, Asian families, and families at the upper ends of the income and net worth distributions experienced declines in both median and mean income.

Overall, net worth seen an increase, with inflation-adjusted average net worth rising by 7% to reach $1.24 million, although median net worth only increased by 2% to $215,900, indicating gains were concentrated among wealthier households. The report described this net worth growth as “much slower” compared to the previous report covering 2019-22.

Significant disparities exist across educational attainment; individuals with a college degree earned 1.9 times the median income compared to those with “some college,” and their median net worth was nearly three times greater. Conversely, lower-income households experienced some decline in wealth, as families in the bottom 25% of income saw a 6% drop in median net worth and a 4% decline in average net worth.
