China Rejects U.S. AI Execs’ Calls to Delay Development

BEIJING — China responded on Monday to demands by U.S. AI executives for companies to slow down the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, condemned such calls, stating that “fear mongering, confrontation, competition will just disrupt [the] process of global AI governance,” according to a translation by Reuters.
This statement came after U.S. CEOs, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Elon Musk, expressed concerns about the rapid development of AI and its associated risks.
On Sunday, China’s Minister of State Security, Chen Yixin, advocated for the swift creation of an AI security risk prevention and control system. He indicated that AI has become “the main battleground for global technological competition and a new arena for strategic rivalry among major powers,” highlighting the necessity for responsible technological advancement.
Market Reactions and Strategic Implications
On the same day, AI-related stocks experienced significant declines, with SoftBank—one of OpenAI’s largest investors—falling 10% in Japan. In an essay published on Saturday, Amodei argued that neglecting the development of AI could deny humanity its benefits, while accelerating the process too much could be reckless. He emphasized that the pace of advancement must consider the competitive edge retained by U.S. firms over “authoritarian regimes, chiefly the Chinese Communist Party.” Amodei warned that excessive slowing could allow Chinese projects to advance unchecked, posing a national security threat.
U.S. President Donald Trump also commented during a visit to Ireland, rejecting the plea for a slowdown. He stated, “Look, we’re leading China in AI… and, frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.”
Additionally, during the recent BRICS summit in New Delhi, President Xi Jinping announced that China would take the lead in facilitating AI collaboration and development with developing nations. Furthermore, there has been an increasing adoption of Chinese AI models among Western companies, reflecting the improvement in their capabilities.
