IMF Upgrades Global Economic Growth Forecast Amid AI Investment Boom

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • IMF raises 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1%, driven by AI investments.
  • Inflation projected at 4.1% for 2027, amid concerns over fiscal health.
  • Growth remains uneven, with specific economies outperforming amid geopolitical tensions.

BANGKOK — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded its global economic growth forecast for 2026 to 3.1%, attributed largely to a boom in AI-driven investments mitigating the impact of rising energy costs. This marks an increase from the previously projected rate of 3% in July, though it remains lower than the 3.5% growth rate observed in 2025. The IMF maintained its forecast for 2027 at 3.4%.

In terms of inflation, the IMF anticipates a rate of 4.1% for 2027, an increase from the 3.9% projected in July, coinciding with prior estimates that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen by mid-July 2027, with a return to pre-war conditions expected by March 2027. For the current year, the inflation outlook is held steady at 4.7%.

The IMF has revised its estimate for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to March 2027 and forecasts a return to pre-war conditions by October of the same year. In September, Gulf crude exports were reported to be at 88% of pre-conflict levels as shipping activity resumed.

This report was presented during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings held in Bangkok, where finance ministers and central bank governors from 191 member countries gathered to address issues such as geopolitical tensions, escalating public debt, and the impact of artificial intelligence.

AI investments have provided a “demand impulse,” enabling the global economy to exceed expectations during the first half of the year despite ongoing challenges from the Middle East conflict and trade tensions. The IMF noted that financial markets remained relatively calm, potentially reflecting a response to what they termed “AI-related exuberance.”

However, the report cautioned that while economies have utilized buffers and adaptive strategies to absorb shocks from recent crises, these measures are becoming less effective. The IMF warned that global oil reserves are declining at a rate of approximately 2.7 million barrels per day, which could lead to destabilizing price fluctuations and further difficulties for AI-led growth.

Skewed Growth

The IMF also highlighted a trend toward uneven global growth, with just 32 economies now contributing to 95% of total growth, a decline from 54 economies earlier this year. Economies with minimal exposure to disruptions from the conflict and those benefitting from AI-driven demand are showing stronger performance, such as Taiwan, projected to grow 10.7% in 2026, and South Korea, expected to achieve a growth rate of 3.3%. The United States is slated to expand by 2.3% in both 2026 and 2027, supported by robust private consumption and technology investments.

In contrast, energy importers not integrated into the tech supply chain face escalating import costs and diminished fiscal space, contributing to a projected growth rate of only 1.1% for the euro zone in 2026, impacted by high energy expenses and reduced consumer confidence. The Middle East and Central Asia are expected to contract by 0.3% this year, with particular countries experiencing significant downturns before anticipated rebounds in 2027.

China’s growth is forecast at 4.5% for 2026, with expectations of 4.0% in 2027, hindered by high oil prices and ongoing structural challenges. The IMF noted that recent weaker-than-expected growth figures underscore these challenges, attributing them to sluggish consumption and persistent property market pressures.

AI-Related Risks

Meanwhile, while the potential of AI investments has bolstered economic resilience, the IMF cautioned that this boom contributes to escalating inflationary pressures and financial vulnerabilities. It described the current situation as a “large, front-loaded demand shock,” where significant capital is flowing into sectors such as semiconductors and data centers before yielding productivity gains.

The IMF warned that a reassessment of the profitability and productivity affiliated with AI could lead to a contraction in investment and a sharp correction in equity markets. Should the anticipated productivity gains from AI fail to materialize, U.S. equities could decline by as much as 20%, and global growth could fall 1.1% below current baseline projections by 2028.

Fiscal Constraints

The IMF observed notable increases in benchmark yields for advanced economies, reaching multidecade highs due to inflation resurgence and accompanying fiscal concerns. Public debt in advanced economies is projected to rise to 115% of GDP by 2031, increasing from 108% in 2025, while emerging economies are expected to see an uptick from 74% to 84%.

These fiscal challenges are compounded by a greater reliance on borrowing from tech firms to sustain AI initiatives, resulting in pressure on primary deficits that remain significantly elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels. The report stressed the urgency of rebuilding fiscal space and recommended that government support for households grappling with higher energy and food prices remain “temporary, targeted, and non-distortionary.”

The IMF’s modeling indicated a 35% probability that global inflation would exceed 5% in 2027, up from 30% in April, affirming that downside risks continue to persist.
