Philadelphia Fed President Warns of Potential Interest Rate Increases to Tackle Inflation
- Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson suggests further interest rate hikes may be necessary to control inflation.
- The Fed’s recent rate increase raised the key funds rate to a target range of 3.75%-4%.
- Markets anticipate a 64% chance of another rate hike in October, with potential increases continuing into 2027.
On Thursday, Anna Paulson, President of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve, indicated that additional interest rate increases might be needed to return inflation to its target level. Her remarks follow last week’s decision by the Federal Open Market Committee to raise benchmark borrowing rates by a quarter percentage point.
This recent rate hike set the key funds rate at a target range of 3.75% to 4%. Paulson stated that this adjustment brings monetary policy closer to what is necessary to achieve a 2% inflation rate, while balancing the associated risks to the labor market. She noted, “Looking ahead, if conditions evolve as I expect, some modest further tightening may be warranted.”
Despite a slight moderation in price pressures observed over the summer, Paulson highlighted that underlying inflation remains elevated, estimated at approximately 2.5% to 3%. She remarked, “The best I can say about underlying inflation this year is that it hasn’t gotten worse,” during her prepared remarks at a fintech conference in her district.
Paulson also emphasized that inflation remains elevated even in the absence of fuel supply shocks influenced by the ongoing conflict in Iran and tariffs. Regarding broader economic conditions, she characterized economic output as “solid” and described the labor market as “holding steady.”
Her comments come as markets increasingly expect further monetary tightening from the Federal Reserve. Recent movements have propelled longer-duration Treasury yields to levels not seen since 2004. Current market assessments indicate a 64% probability that the FOMC will implement another rate hike in October, followed by another in January. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool suggests traders anticipate a 4.8% rate by the end of 2027, implying as many as four additional quarter-point increases.
Earlier on Thursday, John Williams, President of the New York Fed, stated that it is “reasonable” to expect at least one more rate hike before the end of this year.
