BEIJING — During a meeting in the White House Oval Office, Chinese President Xi Jinping informed U.S. President Donald Trump that there are greater opportunities for collaboration than competition regarding artificial intelligence. This statement was part of a readout from state media following their discussions on September 22, 2026.

In his remarks, Xi noted that both nations face competition in the AI sector but stressed that cooperation should take precedence. “Both sides can continue AI dialogue, exchange views on risks and benefits, and together guard against the misuse or malicious use of AI,” he stated, as translated by CNBC.

Xi also underscored the necessity for humans to retain control over technological advancements, asserting that AI should be utilized to promote human progress.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions as the U.S. has imposed restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductors, aimed at limiting its capacity to develop AI technology. There are ongoing concerns regarding Chinese firms potentially engaging in the unauthorized acquisition of American AI capabilities.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that discussions regarding the possibility of establishing a “U.S.-China AI Dialogue” occurred following a meeting with Chinese negotiators in New York. Bessent mentioned that a system for alerting authorities about AI-related incidents was proposed by the U.S.

On the same day, China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed that its senior trade negotiators had engaged in initial talks with their U.S. counterparts over artificial intelligence, reflecting a potential thaw in discussions amidst ongoing trade tensions.
