CD Projekt Red Partners with Paramount for Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Film
- CD Projekt Red confirms partnership with Paramount for a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film.
- Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is reportedly attached to the project.
- Cyberpunk Edgerunners success precedes this venture, with a second season debuting on October 20, 2023.
UPDATE 12PM BST: CD Projekt Red appears to have confirmed its collaboration with Paramount Pictures for a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077. In a statement on X, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.”
ORIGINAL STORY 11:40AM BST: The report regarding the film’s development originates from Deadline, citing that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on blockbuster franchises such as The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Transformers, is involved in the project. CD Projekt Red is collaborating closely on this initiative.
CD Projekt Red’s foray into live-action film is not entirely unexpected, given the success of its Netflix anime series, Cyberpunk Edgerunners. The first season, which premiered in 2022, received praise, with a second season scheduled for release on October 20, 2023. The series has amassed significant viewership on Netflix, as noted by several reports.
This live-action adaptation aligns with a broader trend of video game franchises gaining traction in film and television, exemplified by the successes of The Last of Us and Fallout. CD Projekt Red’s involvement in the Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation could also address previous disappointments regarding the company’s lack of participation in the Witcher Netflix series, which was described as a “missed opportunity” by CD Projekt’s art director Pawel Mileniczuk in a prior interview.
Additionally, CD Projekt Red is in pre-production for Cyberpunk 2, which is being developed with a team of approximately 200 people as of July 31, 2026. This sequel is reported to introduce a second city alongside Night City, characterized as “Chicago gone wrong.”
As for the potential narrative of the film, questions remain regarding its storyline and casting, particularly concerning the iconic character Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the game. Speculation arises about whether Reeves could reprise his role in the film adaptation.
Cyberpunk 2077, released in 2021, faced a contentious launch but has undergone extensive improvements, culminating in a significant relaunch with the “remarkable” Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023.
On a corporate level, Paramount recently completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. and has transitioned into the newly formed mega-entity Skydance. Bobby Kotick, the former leader of Activision, has been appointed to its board.
