CD Projekt Red has revealed that the development of the Chimera tank boss fight in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was a complex process that spanned two years. In the latest episode of the AnsweRED podcast, game director Gabe Amatangelo and creative director Igor Sarzyński elaborated on the challenges encountered during production.
Amatangelo emphasized the multifaceted nature of the project, stating, “Sometimes we’re making content that’s a nexus point of different disciplines – the Chimera is a great example of that. It was gameplay, narrative, art, worldbuilding.” He further described his collaboration with art director Paweł Mielniczuk, sharing how they exchanged various military equipment designs to create a terrifying experience with the tank.
Mielniczuk highlighted the extensive iteration process, mentioning, “I think when we were iterating, it was two years to make this boss fight work. We were iterating over and over.” Amatangelo noted the balancing act required in the development, saying, “There were so many moving parts… Sometimes it was too gameplay, sometimes it was too narrative, sometimes too art demonstration.”
As the discussion continued, Mielniczuk remarked that they refined the tank design multiple times, stating, “We were doing the tank I think four times, changing equipment, the weapons.” Sarzyński added, “One of the most expensive art assets I think ever.” This significant investment in development has paid off, as the Chimera tank fight is recognized as a standout moment in a DLC rich with exciting content.
Former Eurogamer managing editor Tom Senior described Phantom Liberty as a “remarkable expansion and bittersweet end” for Cyberpunk 2077, underscoring the impact of the Chimera tank sequence on the overall gaming experience.
