World of Warcraft: Forever Attracts More Players Than Anticipated Ahead of Launch
- World of Warcraft: Forever set for global release on November 4.
- Beta testing exceeded expectations, causing temporary server issues.
- Developers express excitement about player response and future potential.
Blizzard’s latest title, World of Warcraft: Forever, a spin-off from the original game and produced by the WoW Classic team, has significantly outperformed initial player expectations even before its official launch, scheduled for November 4, 2026.
The ongoing beta test, which has experienced high player traffic, resulted in connection interruptions and notable lag. However, the development team is enthusiastic about the response to the upcoming release.
Josh Greenfield, a developer on the WoW Classic team, remarked on Twitter/X, “Man, it was hard to sleep last night, I was so excited. Beta has been… crazy. The craziest numbers I’ve seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost eight years on classic.” He added, “We’ve got something really special here.”

Senior game producer Tom Ellis also provided insight on Twitter/X into the challenges faced during the beta testing, humorously noting the frustration among players over the game’s lag: “AHMAGERD, this game is 20 years old, how do you still suck at this!?!”
Alright, now the dust has settled and you’re just happily playing away, let’s answer the most common question I’ve seen.
1. AHMAGERD, this game is 20 years old, how do you still suck at this!?!
a. Heh, fair enough, sort answer is, this is our BETA PTR environment stack, it’s not…— Tom Ellis (@FwoiblesWoW) September 18, 2026
Ellis explained the circumstances behind the server issues: “This is our BETA PTR environment stack, it’s not a Production stack by a long, long, long, long shot. Betas for WoW aren’t usually huge meter movers, so this environment just isn’t that powerful.” He acknowledged the login queue as a protective measure but noted that players experienced disconnections after logging in.
By the end of the day, Blizzard had rectified the issues, with Ellis stating, “Marked live once again and you all poured in without fuss. Right now things are incredibly smooth for the first few hours of a public beta,” encouraging players to enjoy their experience.
Blizzard officially revealed World of Warcraft: Forever during BlizzCon 2026, following fan speculation about a potential “wow 2” title after dataminers uncovered color labels on Blizzard’s website. This speculation was closely tied to rumors surrounding World of Warcraft Camelot, also known as “Classic Plus.” The direct confirmation of World of Warcraft: Forever came as Blizzard concluded its opening ceremony at BlizzCon.
