Blizzard Drops Bombshell: No Diablo 4 Expansions Until Diablo 5 – What’s the Real Reason?

Date:

Blizzard Confirms No Further Expansions for Diablo 4 Ahead of Diablo 5 Release

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Blizzard reveals Amazon class for Diablo 4, set for release in 2027.
  • No additional expansions for Diablo 4 are planned before Diablo 5’s 2029 launch.
  • Diablo 4’s upcoming Season of Hell’s Legacy kicks off on September 15, celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

Following the surprise announcement of Diablo 5 at BlizzCon, questions arose regarding the future of Diablo 4. Blizzard disclosed that the Amazon class would return in Diablo 4, scheduled for the first half of 2027, but provided no further details.

Many fans are curious whether Diablo 4 will receive any expansions during the three-year gap leading up to Diablo 5’s release in 2029. However, Blizzard’s current focus suggests disappointment for those hoping for more content in the interim.

“We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5,” said Diablo game director Brent Gibson in an interview with PC Gamer. “We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror.”

While the conclusion of the Lord of Hatred arc offered a sense of resolution, many players might perceive it as the end of a chapter rather than the complete narrative. More story content is expected, but it will be released through upcoming seasonal updates instead of significant expansions.

Set a century after Diablo 4, Diablo 5 will take place in a significantly altered Sanctuary. Although a major expansion could have served as a narrative bridge, the 100-year gap poses challenges. Blizzard aims to explore continuity through seasonal content but has yet to finalize the specifics.

Gibson remarked, “Continuity is something that we’re really excited about, but we don’t necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that’s going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season.”

In the short term, Diablo 4 will launch its next season, Season of Hell’s Legacy, starting tomorrow, September 15. This season marks the 30th anniversary of the franchise and will feature the return of Deckard Cain, leading players in quests against the original Prime Evils: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. Additionally, the Switch 2 port, which includes all previously released content, is also set for release on the same day.
