Grand Theft Auto 6 Eligible for The Game Awards 2026
- Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on November 19, 2026, just one day before The Game Awards’ eligibility cut-off.
- The Game Awards 2026 takes place on December 10, 2026, with GTA 6 expected to compete across multiple categories.
- Rockstar recently released a new launch trailer for GTA 6 while navigating an employment dispute following the dismissal of 31 staff members.
Grand Theft Auto 6, anticipated as one of this generation’s defining games, is set to release on November 19, 2026, making it eligible for The Game Awards 2026 by just one day. According to industry analyst Shinobi602, the cut-off date for nominations is November 20, 2026. The Game Awards’ official FAQ confirms that “Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9pm PT.”
This timing may raise questions about the fairness of the eligibility window; however, Shinobi602 noted that cut-off dates have generally fluctuated only by a day or two each year. With GTA 6, there is significant speculation about its potential impact on the awards, drawing comparisons to Rockstar’s previous major title, Red Dead Redemption 2, which won four awards at The Game Awards 2018, including Best Narrative and Best Performance.
The current record for wins at The Game Awards is held by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which garnered nine awards, including Game of the Year. Prior to Clair Obscur, Baldur’s Gate 3 held the record with six wins. In contrast, GTA 6 is expected to have a vastly larger budget and scope, raising expectations for its performance in 2026.
The Game Awards 2026 will take place on December 10 and traditionally concludes the annual gaming cycle. Eurogamer is listed among the jury members responsible for voting at the awards.
Recently, Rockstar unveiled a new launch trailer for GTA 6, showcasing the characters Jason and Lucia engaged in a romantic relationship amidst the pressures of a crime-filled environment. Additionally, Rockstar is currently involved in a legal dispute in Scotland regarding the termination of 31 staff members from Rockstar North last year, with allegations of union-busting. The tribunal’s verdict is anticipated in mid-November, coinciding closely with the release of GTA 6.
