Summer Eternal: A Groundbreaking Community-Focused RPG from Former Disco Elysium Developers
- The upcoming RPG, Summer Eternal, combines isometric gameplay with immersive sim elements.
- Players can join a non-profit organization that owns 5% of the studio and influences governance.
- The newly announced Anthology, available for purchase, details the studio’s vision and provides community insights.
Summer Eternal, the anticipated RPG developed by a team of former Disco Elysium creators, aims to blend the rich narrative style of text-heavy isometric role-playing games with the dynamic world-building and player agency typically found in immersive simulations. Described as an “incendiary RPG,” the game is currently in development, promising a unique gaming experience that could redefine the genre.
A notable aspect of Summer Eternal is its innovative approach to community involvement. By purchasing any product from the studio, including the recently announced 500-page Anthology, players can join the Players Non-Profit organization, which holds a 5% stake in Summer Eternal and participates in its governance. According to the studio, “The Players Non-Profit owns a five percent share in our studio. The other 95 percent is divided between other stakeholders: full-time workers, freelancers and investors in Summer Eternal.” This structure grants members a significant voice in studio decisions.
Summer Eternal positions itself as more of a collective than a traditional company, maintaining community and developer ownership as a core principle. The studio states, “Although five percent is a shy amount, it’s still powerful enough for the player-pool to summon a general Assembly to discuss a topic.” The Players Non-Profit is intended to serve as “the voice of the gamers,” fostering community involvement in game development decisions. Revenue from the game can be utilized for events, support for union activities, or initiatives determined by the assembly of members.
Furthermore, the studio emphasizes its commitment to transparency, suggesting that players can directly challenge development features they disagree with. This level of community engagement is relatively rare in the gaming industry, which typically sees studios operate behind closed doors until a polished product is ready for unveiling. While some studios experiment with Early Access, Summer Eternal’s communal development model represents an exciting shift in the industry landscape.
The Anthology itself serves as both a manifesto for Summer Eternal’s progressive development ethos and an exploration of the gaming industry landscape in 2026, featuring interviews with notable figures such as economists Yanis Varoufakis and Richard Wolff, science fiction author Ted Chiang, and Bioware veterans Mark Darrah and David Gaider. It also includes insights from worker-run organizations like the UVW-CWA, Aftermath, and Peregrine Coast Press.
For those interested, the Anthology is available for purchase at €69 for the Standard edition and €99 for the Deluxe Firestarter bundle, which includes additional merchandise. Purchasers will automatically receive membership in the Summer Eternal Players Non-Profit organization, which can be joined through the studio’s website.
