Despite pre-launch community concerns and a beta that performed below expectations on PC, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 appears to be gaining traction following its release. Currently, the game stands with a Very Positive rating (92 percent) based on more than 3,100 user reviews on Steam.
The campaign for Modern Warfare 4 became available for early access on 13th October, with reviews improving as players engage with the campaign’s missions, which span just over six hours in total. Access to this early version required digital pre-orders of any edition of the game.
As the game’s official launch is not until 23rd October, accurate player numbers remain speculative since SteamDB is unable to disclose data without its tracking bot having a copy of the game.
The initial player reception for Modern Warfare 4 is significantly more favorable than that of the previous title, Black Ops 7, which holds a Mostly Negative rating (37 percent). Currently, Modern Warfare 4 is the highest-rated entry in the Call of Duty franchise in over a decade.
While these ratings reflect enthusiastic players, it is important to note that current reviewers may consist of the franchise’s most dedicated fans who may be more forgiving. Although a comprehensive review has not been conducted yet, IGN awarded the campaign an 8/10 shortly after its access launch.
In terms of comparisons, the 2019 iteration of Modern Warfare is close with a Mostly Positive rating (79 percent), whereas 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 is rated far lower at Mixed (45 percent). Among other titles, Black Ops: Cold War also achieved a Mostly Positive rating (79 percent).
The next significant event for Modern Warfare 4 is the rollout of its extraction shooter mode, DMZ, which is set to launch early for pre-orders on 20th October. Additionally, traditional multiplayer features will become available on the official release date of 23rd October, a moment likely to influence player sentiment further.
