Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5, which is slated for release in spring 2029. This announcement was made during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, where the company revealed a departure from the franchise’s traditional narrative, as previous Diablo games have focused on preventing an apocalypse while this installment begins amidst one already in progress.
Set a century after the events of Diablo 4, the story unfolds in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already emerged victorious, leaving its heroes defeated. As Blizzard stated, “Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won.”
A panel featuring Blizzard president Johanna Faries and the Diablo 5 development team provided an initial glimpse into the game’s setting, classes, and overall creative direction. It was confirmed that two classes from previous entries—the Demon Hunter and Monk—will return, joined by a new class known as Plague Knight.
While the panel offered insights into the classes and game world, further details regarding gameplay mechanics and progression remained scarce. Additionally, Blizzard announced the development of an animated series in collaboration with Netflix, although specifics about this project were not revealed.
The teaser for the animated series hints at an expanding threat: “Sanctuary’s darkness is spreading.” Blizzard and Netflix are collaborating to bring this new animated interpretation of the Diablo universe, promising further updates as development progresses. In celebration of its legacy, the Diablo franchise has garnered over 130 million players globally since its inception in 1996, marking its 30th anniversary this year.
