GTA 6’s Single-Player Launch Clarified; Multiplayer Details Unveiled
- GTA 6 will debut on 19th November with only a single-player campaign.
- Twitch CEO Dan Clancy hints at a multiplayer launch next year, possibly as early as January.
- Rockstar is reportedly committed to supporting existing GTA Online, despite the new release.
Rockstar Games has not disclosed details about the multiplayer aspect of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), which is anticipated to succeed the widely popular Grand Theft Auto Online. As it stands, the game is set to launch on 19th November, exclusively featuring the single-player campaign.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy suggested a potential timeline for GTA 6’s multiplayer debut, stating, “We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
Historically, GTA Online was introduced two weeks post-launch of GTA 5, while Red Dead Online, the multiplayer for Red Dead Redemption 2, was released seven months after that game’s initial launch. Clancy’s vague reference to “next year” raises possibilities for the multiplayer rollout ranging from January 2025 to as late as the end of 2027. A timeline similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 is more likely, suggesting a summer launch for the new multiplayer mode.
Concerns regarding Rockstar’s continued support for the current GTA Online may be unfounded. In 2025, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, stated to IGN that the company maintains support for legacy brands, noting, “people don’t necessarily drop their old toys just because there are new ones on the shelves.”
Zelnick further explained, “I’m going to speak theoretically only because I’m not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn’t been made. But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles… So we’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
As excitement builds for GTA 6’s release, other announcements have surfaced, including details about the game’s soundtrack and global unlock times. Xbox users may still be able to exploit the “New Zealand trick” to access the game early. Additionally, several retailers have cautioned that GTA 6 codes are region-locked, emphasizing the importance of purchasing the correct version for your locale.
Amid the anticipation, Rockstar Games is also facing scrutiny due to ongoing proceedings with the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain. This relates to the dismissal of 31 Rockstar North employees nearly a year ago, which is alleged to be part of a union-busting effort.
