Jagex Cancels RuneScape: Reignited After Strong Community Backlash
- RuneScape: Reignited has been cancelled just two weeks after its announcement.
- The mode aimed to create a new economy but faced severe criticism from the community.
- Future updates for RuneScape, including an Adventure Guide and new MMO RuneScape 4, are still planned.
Jagex has officially cancelled RuneScape: Reignited, just under two weeks following its announcement. The new game mode, which was revealed at RuneFest earlier this month, was designed to allow players to create fresh characters within a separate economy. Players using Reignited accounts were to be limited to trading among themselves and barred from engaging bosses alongside existing RuneScape characters, aiming to attract new players. However, this initiative was met with immediate backlash from the veteran community.
In a blog post and accompanying YouTube video, Jagex associate creative director Mod Ryan explained the reason for the cancellation: “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views.” He noted, “It is super important to us because the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited.”
Feedback against Reignited primarily highlighted concerns about dividing the player base and potentially alienating loyal players. The introduction of separate economies for Reignited characters posed a risk of undermining existing accounts. Since Reignited accounts would not interface with established ones, veterans faced the dilemma of abandoning years of progress to participate in the new mode. The absence of an option to transfer existing accounts compounded these concerns, leaving many players hesitant to embrace the change.
The underlying motivation for introducing Reignited stemmed from ongoing inflation issues within RuneScape’s in-game economy, making it increasingly challenging for newcomers to progress. Currently, a Bond (which can be exchanged for premium membership) costs 11.2 million coins on Old School RuneScape and 141.3 million coins on standard RuneScape, creating significant barriers for new players. While Reignited aimed to ease this entry hurdle, its cancellation leaves Jagex to confront the same economic challenges going forward.
Despite the setback with RuneScape: Reignited, Jagex remains focused on future developments. Mod Ryan has confirmed that RuneScape will receive an Adventure Guide update and other enhancements in December, along with a free trial option. Additionally, an entirely new MMO titled RuneScape 4 was also announced during the RuneFest event.
