Yacht Club Games Shifts Focus to New 3D Title Following Success of Mina the Hollower

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Yacht Club Games is now developing a new 3D game, possibly Shovel Knight 3D, after the success of Mina the Hollower.
  • Mina the Hollower sold over 500,000 copies within its first two weeks, securing financial stability for the studio.
  • The developers plan to add post-release features and are not abandoning Mina, while exploring options for future projects.

Yacht Club Games has announced that the majority of its developers are now focused on creating a new 3D game, potentially titled Shovel Knight 3D. This decision follows the successful launch of Mina the Hollower, which has been praised by critics.

Before the release of Mina the Hollower earlier this year, Yacht Club labeled it a “make-or-break” moment for the studio, which had faced challenges such as the global pandemic and a previous failed attempt to diversify into multiple projects.

According to a recent Reddit AMA, Sean Velasco confirmed that the performance of Mina the Hollower has provided the studio with much-needed financial stability. He stated, “yes… for now!” The game reportedly sold over 500,000 copies in its first two weeks and is on the path towards reaching one million copies.

While the team is not yet ready to discuss potential downloadable content or spin-offs, they are committed to enhancing Mina the Hollower with various post-release features. These upgrades will include “expanded randomizer options, enemy and boss randomization, more modifiers, speedrunner features,” and additional gameplay enhancements.

In response to queries regarding an unannounced 3D Shovel Knight project, Velasco previously indicated to Bloomberg that development was halfway complete before the studio shifted its focus to Mina the Hollower. Alec Faulkner mentioned, “most of us are currently working on a 3D game, yes!” However, he refrained from confirming any details about Shovel Knight 3D, stating, “Not sayin more! Other than that it’s gonna be soooooooo awesome.”

Co-founder Nick Wozniac elaborated on the company’s organizational structure, acknowledging that dividing the team was likely a misstep. He emphasized that “sales are the things that keep the company afloat,” adding that their priority is to collaborate effectively to produce exceptional games. Wozniac reflected on their current situation, expressing gratitude for the lessons learned and the importance of maintaining a focused team to achieve success.

Eurogamer rated Mina the Hollower five stars, calling it “an adventure that takes inspiration from the greats.”
