Nintendo Reports Decline in Switch 2 Hardware Sales Despite Strong Software Performance
- Nintendo sold 6.49 million Switch 2 units, a 37.4% decline year-on-year.
- Software sales for Switch 2 rose 18.8% to 24.49 million units, driven by Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
- The company anticipates a total of 16.50 million Switch 2 units sold by FY27’s end.
Nintendo’s latest financial earnings report reveals a significant decline in Switch 2 hardware sales while highlighting robust software sales, particularly attributed to the success of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
According to Nintendo’s 2nd Quarter fiscal earnings report for the period ending 30th September 2026, Switch 2 hardware sales fell to 6.49 million units, representing a 37.4 percent decline compared to the same period last year. Additionally, original Switch sales decreased to 1.27 million units, reflecting a 32.7 percent drop.
Despite the observed decline, Nintendo had forecasted reduced hardware sales and anticipates selling 16.50 million Switch 2 units by the end of the current fiscal year (FY27).
In contrast, software sales for Nintendo experienced an 18.8 percent year-on-year increase for Switch 2, reaching 24.49 million units, while original Switch software sales rose by 6.8 percent. The surge in software sales can be credited to several prominent title releases during the first half of FY27, with Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream selling 8.81 million copies, followed by Rhythm Heaven Groove at 2.89 million and Splatoon Raiders, the sole Switch 2 exclusive, at 2.42 million units. Additionally, Nintendo noted a remarkable 60.5 percent year-on-year rise in digital game sales.
However, despite the boost in software unit sales and the adverse impact of the “continued weakness of the Yen,” Nintendo’s overall business saw a year-on-year decline of 15.3 percent.
Looking ahead, remaining releases for Nintendo’s current fiscal year include the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which launches today and garnered a five-star rating in Eurogamer’s review, alongside the Switch 2 re-releases of Pikmin 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, as well as Metroid Ravenous set for an early 2027 release.
