Sony Exits Kojima Productions’ “Physint” Amid Budget Concerns; Xbox Takes Over
- Sony steps away from Kojima Productions’ “Physint” due to concerns over budget and profitability.
- The game, initially slated as a PlayStation exclusive, missed deadlines and experienced budget overruns.
- Xbox has acquired the project, viewing it as a valuable investment for its PC and media presence.
Sony has announced it is discontinuing its relationship with Kojima Productions regarding the “action espionage” game “Physint,” a decision based on worries over budget, profitability, and exclusivity. According to a report by Bloomberg, sources indicated that the commercial performance of Hideo Kojima’s previous games, “Death Stranding” and “Death Stranding 2,” influenced this decision. Although both received critical acclaim, they failed to meet Sony’s revenue expectations.
The report further claims that “Physint” was over budget and had missed deadlines, despite being several years away from release. Additionally, the game was intended for release on platforms beyond PlayStation, which made Sony hesitant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into a non-exclusive project.
This development follows earlier reports that Sony has shifted away from its multi-platform strategy and will no longer release its single-player PlayStation titles on PC, choosing to keep them exclusive to the PS5. As “Physint” is an intellectual property owned by Kojima Productions, this shift contradicted Sony’s new approach. Bloomberg pointed out that the longstanding business relationship between Hideo Kojima and Sony has been impacted by recent departures of executives close to Kojima.
Sony has also encountered significant software issues, including the failure of “Concord” in 2024 and ongoing challenges with “Marathon,” leading to stricter production milestones that have resulted in multiple game cancellations. Additionally, the costs of producing consoles have increased due to the generative AI industry, prompting Sony to focus on maximizing revenue from its current user base instead of expanding its audience.
In the wake of Sony’s exit, Xbox has taken over the “Physint” project. Microsoft’s gaming division has faced its own series of controversies, including layoffs and the effects of BTS boycotts. However, according to Bloomberg, Xbox views “Physint” as a strong investment because of its potential presence on PC and associated film and television rights, aligning with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s vision of expanding company franchises into various media.
An Xbox representative stated, “Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call. We believe in his team’s ability to build AAA games with groundbreaking, new IP and we believe in OD, Physint, and our growing partnership.”
