The physical versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will necessitate a download, as Square Enix asserts that including the entire game on a single disc would have compromised its quality. This explanation was provided by series director Naoki Hamaguchi.
This announcement has left fans who are both collectors of physical games and followers of the Final Fantasy 7 series feeling disappointed. Although the final entry in the Remake trilogy is being released physically on all major consoles, players will still need to download extra game data to start playing.
Naoki Hamaguchi explained, “Each platform has limitations when it comes to physical media capacity, but we believed that compromising the quality of the final chapter in order to achieve a fully on-disc release would ultimately not be in the best interest of many fans.” He further added, “We understand that this decision may not meet everyone’s expectations. Even so, in today’s market, where the industry is steadily moving toward a disc-less future, we believe there is real value in being able to offer a physical edition at all.”
Some fans have responded by spotlighting that earlier titles in the series, such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, launched on two discs, which together held the entirety of their games. They argue that Square Enix could have similarly utilized multiple discs for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
Currently, the physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X come with one disc each, while the Nintendo Switch 2 version includes a Game-Key card. All these editions require an internet connection for additional game installation.
The topic of physical game releases has gained traction since Sony’s announcement to cease the manufacturing of new PlayStation games on discs starting in 2028, which has sparked considerable discussion and concern among gamers.
