Eric Barone Offers Insights into Haunted Chocolatier in New GQ Interview
- Eric Barone discusses his upcoming game, Haunted Chocolatier, in a GQ interview.
- The game will focus more on action RPG elements compared to Stardew Valley.
- No release date has been provided; Barone emphasizes that the game is still in development.
In a recent interview with GQ, Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley, shared new details about his highly-anticipated follow-up title, Haunted Chocolatier. Addressing themes such as creative burnout and the significance of ‘cosy gaming’, Barone revealed that the upcoming game offers a different experience from its predecessor.
Barone described Haunted Chocolatier as having a stronger focus on action RPG mechanics: “It is still what I call a town game,” he stated. “But it’s more of an action RPG – the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights.”
While Stardew Valley included combat elements, these were mainly limited to specific areas such as the mines. Fans who enjoyed exploring this feature will likely appreciate the new direction of Haunted Chocolatier. Barone remarked, “[The new game] is for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That’s what I do, honestly.”
The creator also mentioned that Haunted Chocolatier provides a more “metaphysical” experience compared to Stardew Valley, referencing its themes of ghosts and spirits. He firmly stated, “no one’s playing the game until I’m ready to show it”, indicating that a release date is not yet available.
In January, Barone noted the game’s development status, stating, “I’m alive, the game is still in development.” He also mentioned that the world of Haunted Chocolatier would be larger than that of Stardew Valley. Regarding the release timeline, Barone emphasized, “The bottom line is, I don’t want to give a release date. The game will come out when it’s done.”
